Individual Counseling

FAQ: What to Expect in Individual Counseling with Colleen

Do you accept insurance?

I do not accept insurance at this time. All sessions are private pay.

This decision is one I continue to reflect on carefully, as I work to balance accessibility of care for clients with the need to support myself in a way that allows me to show up fully present in our sessions. By not working through insurance, I avoid spending time navigating bureaucracy (like being on hold with insurance companies), and can instead focus that energy on supporting you more directly.

Paying privately also gives you more autonomy. Insurance companies often limit the number of sessions they cover—or only authorize therapy if certain diagnoses are given. Many do not cover couples counseling at all. Paying out of pocket allows us to move at your pace, with the freedom to schedule the number and frequency of sessions that feel right for your process.

If you have out-of-network benefits, I can provide a superbill (a detailed receipt) that you may submit to your insurance for possible reimbursement. I recommend checking with your provider to understand your specific coverage.

What is the cost and length of sessions?

  • Standard individual sessions are 50 minutes and cost $155.

  • Extended individual sessions are 105 minutes (two 50 minute sessions, with a 5 minute break) and cost $310. These are available upon request, as some clients find longer sessions helpful for intake or deeper work, especially if they need more time to process.

What can I expect from therapy?

Therapy is a place for reflection, support, and perspective-shifting—not a place where I offer quick fixes or advice. As much as I wish I could wave a magic wand and make problems disappear, meaningful change happens when you’re ready to do the work, both inside and outside of our sessions.

My role is to walk alongside you, to help you connect with your own inner wisdom. I believe you are the expert on your life, and I deeply trust that you know what’s best for you.

Will I have to talk about painful or vulnerable experiences?

Only when you are ready. I know that sharing personal, painful, or deeply vulnerable parts of your life can take time. We will always go at your pace.

Sometimes, I may ask questions that feel personal or specific. Please know:

  • You can always pass on a question—there’s no pressure to answer anything you're not ready to.

  • Every question I ask has a purpose. If you're unsure about why I'm asking something, you're welcome to ask me about it first.

Therapy should feel like a space where you are in control of your story.

Do you give advice?

I don’t give advice in the traditional sense. Therapy with me isn’t about me telling you what to do—it’s about helping you gain insight, explore possibilities, and make decisions that feel aligned with your values and needs.

That said, I will offer reflections, grounding tools, or observations when they might be helpful. But ultimately, I believe that you are the one who gets to decide what’s right for your life.

What if I’m neurodivergent or have unique access needs?

You are welcome here exactly as you are. My practice is neurodiversity-affirming and inclusive of all identities and ways of being. If you have communication preferences, sensory needs, or other accessibility concerns, I invite you to share them—I’m happy to adjust the space or our process to better support your comfort and agency.

How do I schedule a session or get started?

You can reach out via email at Colleen@ColleenLehmanCounseling.com to schedule a free consultation or first session. I typically begin with a brief intake to understand what’s bringing you in and to see if we’re a good fit. From there, we can schedule ongoing sessions at a rhythm that works for you.

How does scheduling work?

I offer recurring appointments on a weekly or bi-weekly basis. These consistent rhythms tend to support deeper, more sustainable progress in therapy.

If you're looking for less frequent, maintenance-style counseling, I’m happy to support that—but those sessions will need to be scheduled one or two at a time, rather than as an ongoing recurring slot. I typically schedule these on a quarterly basis, and availability may vary depending on my current caseload.

If we notice a pattern of frequently canceling or missing recurring appointments, we’ll have a conversation about whether it might make more sense to switch to scheduling on a case-by-case basis—or explore if another recurring time might work better for your current needs.

This structure helps me offer consistency and fairness to all clients while also making sure you’re getting the kind of support that fits best for where you are in your process.
